Chapter Seven
Conall slipped his feet into his tennis shoes. Heâd hoped Asia would have returned by now. Heâd wanted nothing more than to eat away the early morning hours in bed together, ignoring the rest of the world and focusing on the intense pleasure they created together.
He'd wanted to lie in bed afterward and talk about seeing each other again even after they docked in Maine. Seeing each other again when her business trip was done.
He didnât have to take that job in Portland; he could go back to A Coruña or wherever she was based. He wasnât tied to any place anymore. His mom was gone; even if his father were still around, he didnât give a ratâs ass about the man. Conall was an only child. Any relatives he may have on his motherâs side hadnât been in contact since he was a kid, and he knew nothing about his fatherâs side of the family, which was fine by him.
All he wanted was to be with Asia, for however long sheâd tolerate him. He hoped her tolerance didnât have an expiration date.
Christ, listen to him. Heâd sure fallen fast, hadnât he?
Shaking his head at his own folly, he stood and headed for the door, abandoning his hope of spending the morning in bed. Asia had been gone for so long that now he was starving.
So, heâd head down to the dining hall, eat breakfast with her, then they could return to his cabin, bellies full, regenerated for another bout of exhaustive lovemaking.
Yeah, that sounded like a plan.
As he reached for the knob, the door flung open, and Asia stood on the threshold, eyes wide, pupils dilated. Her dark skin was flushed, and her hair was wind-whipped, strands tugged from her braid, as if sheâd been running.
Automatically, he pulled her into the room and into his arms, holding her tightly, reassuring her without words that whatever it was, heâd help her deal.
âWhat happened?â he asked when her shivering finally began to subside.
Brushing her hair out of her face, she strode to the porthole, staring out for a long moment, before turning to face him. âBad memories. Really bad. Caught me off guard.â
He nodded and hugged her again. âI get it. If you want the truth, the reason Iâm even here is because of bad memories.â
She leaned back so she could look him in the face. âReally? Do you want to talk about it?â
Chuckling, he kissed her temple. âYouâre the one in distress right now. Why donât you talk about it?â
She shook her head. âI am not in distress. In fact, Iâm much better now.â She said it shyly, like she wasnât sure how heâd react.
He hugged her more tightly. Because he couldnât get enough, didnât ever want to stop touching her. âIâve got you.â
He felt her smile against his chest. âTell me your story,â she said.
âYou sure you donât want to go first?â He was only half-teasing. He honestly didnât want to taint her image of him by letting
